WHY WE BELIEVE IN OUR PROGRAM
At Twisted Clovers, we believe that puppies and dogs should not spend their lives confined to a kennel. Labradors are social animals that thrive on companionship and love to be part of their families. By placing our puppies in nurturing homes from a young age, we ensure they receive the best start in life and the happiness they deserve. This approach allows us to provide the highest quality care for our dogs by partnering with dedicated families who share our commitment to their well-being.
ONLY THE BEST
Our Guardian Home Program offers selected families the opportunity to choose from our "pick of the litter," allowing them to be actively involved in the breeding process. This fosters a strong bond between us and our Guardian families. Once a breeding dog has completed her designated number of litters, she will be spayed and become the sole property of her Guardian family. Guardian families play a vital role in our program, and together we will build lasting relationships as we embark on this journey. It’s truly rewarding to contribute to the arrival of top-quality, healthy puppies that will bring joy to countless families and change lives for the better.
The Guardian puppy is a cherished member of the Guardian family for life, while Twisted Clovers retains breeding rights for a specified number of litters—typically three—before she is released into her forever home. Once her breeding career is complete, the Guardian dog will be spayed at Twisted Clovers’ expense, ensuring she remains a beloved pet.
From the very beginning, the dog is integrated as a family member. We encourage bonding activities, such as enrolling in obedience or other training classes with your breeding dog. Like any well-loved pet, they require regular exercise and plenty of playtime. Some families even have the opportunity to join therapy dog programs, allowing them to visit hospitals, hospices, schools, and libraries with their Guardian dog.
ALL ABOUT THE CARE
Guardian families play a crucial role in caring for our dogs, which includes providing high-quality, nutrient-rich dog food. It is essential that the guardian dog receives proper nutrition to thrive. Families are also responsible for maintaining the training that the guardian dog has already received, which involves reinforcing commands and teaching new ones.
In addition, guardian families must ensure that their dog receives vaccinations, monthly heartworm and tick prevention, and annual veterinary check-ups. Proper yard fencing or regular leashed walks is also necessary to keep the dog safe.
As a guardian, it is vital to keep your dog away from any intact males, as this is a critical requirement that can result in a breach of contract. Our Guardian dogs will not be left outside for extended periods; they are expected to be strictly indoor pets. Ultimately, you are responsible for ensuring the well-being and best interests of your Guardian dog.
HOW OFTEN WILL MY DOG BE GONE?
Our Guardian dogs may require health test appointments that necessitate a visit to Twisted Clovers or can be taken to an agreed-upon veterinary clinic if both parties consent. There are eight essential health tests that need to be scheduled at age-appropriate times, and the costs for these tests are covered by Twisted Clovers.
When the Guardian female is in season, it is imperative that the Guardian Family contacts us immediately. An intact female typically has a heat cycle lasting between 14 and 21 days. During this period, we will need access to her for breeding-related appointments once she has successfully passed all health testing.
The female will stay with us for 3 to 10 days during her heat cycle for breeding. After she has been bred, she may either remain with us until pregnancy is confirmed and she begins nesting in her whelping box or return to her Guardian Family until two weeks before her due date. At that point, she will return to Twisted Clovers for the duration of her pregnancy and will be returned to her family once her puppies are fully weaned, approximately 7 to 8 weeks later. Guardian Families are encouraged to visit their Guardian dog during her stay at Twisted Clovers by scheduling appointments.
We collaborate closely with our Guardian Homes through a detailed contract, providing ongoing support and guidance throughout the year. At the conclusion of the Guardian Home Family contract, the female dog will belong entirely to the Guardian Family.
At Twisted Clovers, we are passionate about our program and are optimistic about its success. We carefully select our Guardian Families through an application process. If, for any reason, the program does not work for a Guardian Family, the breeding dog must be returned to Twisted Clovers, and the contract will be voided. Under no circumstances will any dog from Twisted Clovers be re-homed, as this will result in legal action.
